Hutton Cranswick tidy up 2014

Article from Driffield Times & Post 12.6.14

Hutton Cranswick station is well used.  Recently drivers exiting the station have complained about visibility being compromised by a very overgrown hedge.

Now the hedge has been cut down to size thanks to volunteers from YCCRP, Village in bloom and community minded villagers.

On 5th June once the hedge had been checked for late nesting birds, Tony Cooper, Alan Gouldthorpe and Lawrie Greenwood (YCCRP) began cutting down the arboreal ivy.  Fortunately for the group, local resident and Parish Councillor, John Poolford came by and offered to assist by using his hedge cutter.  This speeded up the job significantly.

ViB members provided green bags, rakes and brushes and assisted with clearing up the cuttings.  Hutton Cranswick in bloom is a group member of the YCCRP so it was a useful experience to work together for the improvement of their local station.

Cliff Mayall, Northern Rail Station Manager, East Yorkshire, was on hand to oversee the work and discuss other station issues with ViB member Glynis Jenner.

It would seem that care of the hedge had ‘fallen between the cracks’ of responsibility.  However,  now that it has been ‘cut down to size’ Northern Rail contractors ISS should be able to maintain it.

Sincere thanks to everyone who helped, especially to John Poolford and Sean Paxton from Station House whose input greatly assisted the working group.

Thanks to John and Sandy for providing refreshments.  Cliff Mayall commented that ‘It is a privilege to work with the Village in bloom group who do a fantastic job looking after Hutton Cranswick station—it’s the best station on the line.’

Transport Surgeries 2014

YCCRP members recently assisted at Transport Surgeries run by CHEF, on behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, with a bus in Saturday Market, Beverley, on 28th May during inclement weather. The day after was much more successful with a stall at Driffield Market.

Hull University Marketing Event 2014

The open day at Hull University on 14th June was rather quieter than usual, although we were pleased to have one new member on our team.  As usual we promoted the 16 to 25 Young Persons Rail Card to around 50 prospective students and gave travel information from their home town to Hull as well as ticket wallets as encouragement! and gave out rail information and timetables to the students.

Scarborough Marketing Event - October 2014

Three volunteers managed our stand on Scarborough station, alongside First Transpennine Express,  welcoming guests to the ACoRP Dinner and Presentations on Thursday 2nd October.  We were there again to see them off on Friday morning.  It was very pleasant chatting to so many members of different CRPs as well as meeting representatives of various TOCs and rail organisations.  We were able to give away quite a few of our drinks bottles. There were also a few members of the public to serve as usual.  We recorded 148 in total, and probably missed one or two!

Halloween Express - October 2014

On Friday 31st October Barry organised a Halloween Express from Bridlington to Hull.  Children travelled free if they dressed in Halloween costumes.  They were judged at Hull Paragon station and then given a tour of the station including the disused police offices and the underground prison cells.  Some of the parents were more frightened than the kids.

Santa Special - December 2014

On Saturday 13th December, we ran our Santa Special train again.  Santa was on the 9:47 Hull to Scarborough train and the 11:27 Scarborough - Hull.  Children travelling with their parents were given free goodies whilst the adults were served refreshments.  The event was very popular as usual.

Easter Special - April 2015

The Easter Egg Special train ran on Saturday 4th April.  It went very well on a rather busier service than in previous years.  Thanks to Barry for organisation and distributing the raffle tickets, and to Alan for the photographs.
The two winners on the first section (Hull-Bridlington) were presented with their eggs at Bridlington. They travelled from Driffield to Bridlington, but unfortunately their details were misplaced.  The winners on the remaining section were Michaela Woods, travelling from Bridlington to Scarborough, and Finlay Sanderson of Leeds who was travelling from Filey to Scarborough.
Children on the Special were given a Cadbury Crème Egg, and remaining eggs were distributed on the return journey.
Thanks also to the suffering crew (who were rewarded for their trouble!)

Community Rail in the City - May 2015

On Wednesday 20th May some of our volunteers travelled to London Kings Cross to take part in ‘Community Rail in the City day’ by promoting our line on a stand in the concourse.

Puffin Special - May 2015

On Saturday 23rd May we teamed up with Northern Rail and RSPB Bempton to run a ‘Puffin Special’ train.  Passengers were taken from Bempton station to the reserve and taken on a free puffin patrol guided walk.

Cottingham Day - July 2015

Some of our volunteers had a stall at the Cottingham day on Saturday 4th July.

They did a great day’s work and had about 100 enquiries and gave many leaflets out.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

A great partnership working between the YCCRP and Hull & East Riding Rail User Association

The weather stayed dry and when the sun came out it got very warm.

Yorkshire Day - August 2015

1st August was Yorkshire day and some of our volunteers manned a stall at Hull Paragon station.  Thanks to Transpennine Express for supplying the bunting and flags and to all who helped on our stall.  A lot of information was given out to members of the public promoting this line and the local area.
